Thursday night, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms struck parts of Washington DC, but one video of a lightning bolt striking the Washington Monument was widely shared on social media.
Local news station WUSA9 ‘s sky camera captured an incredible video of lightning that struck the iconic tower around midnight during a thunderstorm in town. The footage was seen more than 5 million times on Twitter.
The Washington Monument, the 555-foot-tall obelisk, is one of the area ‘s highest buildings, and is struck very frequently by lightning. This time, though, people on social media thought it was a ‘warning’ given the US situation.
Despite the heavy showers and lightning, protestors continued protesting at anti-racism demonstrations near the White House over George Floyd ‘s death.
